Safe Zone

The mission of the Safe Zone Program at Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵapp is to promote awareness, provide resources, and offer a network of allies committed to enhancing the campus and local community’s understanding of gender and sexuality. The program supports an inclusive environment for all individuals, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression, and seeks to foster a community where all members feel respected and valued.

The Safe Zone symbol identifies people and places on campus as supportive and affirming for LGBTQ+ students, faculty, staff, and community members. It signifies a commitment to safety, trustworthiness, and respect, ensuring that individuals can seek assistance, advice, or engage in conversations within a supportive and respectful environment.

In alignment with Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵapp's commitment to equality, nondiscrimination, and freedom of speech and expression, the Safe Zone Program addresses any transphobic or heterosexist comments and actions in an educational and informative manner. While respecting the rights of all individuals to hold and express their own opinions, the program aims to correct myths or misinformation about LGBTQ+ individuals in a way that is respectful and aligned with the university's policies on nondiscrimination, academic freedom, and free speech.

The Safe Zone training program at WCU is based on the Safe Zone Project.

The content of the program at WCU is faculty-created and the implementation is supported by partners across campus, including ICA.
